Theatre & Stage reviews by SalsaChicago.com critic Al Bresloff

Much Ado About Nothing (thru Feb.26,2006)

Many Shakespeare lovers may not love the newest production at Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier, but this production will be one for those who are not into Shakespeare, as the Bard's witty tale of would be lovers has been cast to perfection with some of our local actors bringing their talent to the stage. Directed by Canadian Marti Maraden with style and grace, this production features Kelli Fox and Jim Mezon (Both Canadians)as hesitant lovers Beatrice and Benedick, who are brilliant in their roles (but to be honest, I am quite certain Chicago actors could have handled these roles). The story is a love story: confirmed bachelor Benedick returns from battle to civilian life and declares war upon Beatrice and vice versa. Their friends engage them into thinking that the other loves them and the arrow of Cupid falls upon them. The other love story is that of Hero (cousin of Beatrice) played by the lovely Susan Shunk and Claudio (John Hoogenakker) who appear to be a match made in heaven until Don John (the wily Sean Fortunato) slanders the innocence of Hero and then some merry mayhem (as often used in Shakespeare's comedies) takes place. This being a comedy, to use a Shakespeare quote, you know that "All's well that ends well".

There are some very shining performances and moments in this production. James Harms, Don Forston, Bernie Landis, Kevin Gudahl, James Vincent Meredith,William Dick and the most memorable, Scott Jaeck (who steals every scene he is in) as Dogberry, the Master Constable. Just watching him work is worth the price of the ticket. You can visit the town of Messina at The Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier until February 26th with performances as follows:

Tuesday January 3rd and 10th at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (No matinee on Feb 1,8 and 15) Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Fridays at 8 p.m. Saturdays at 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (12/31 features a champagne intermission and of course Navy Pier's Fireworks at Midnight) Sundays at 3 p.m. Starting January 8th.

Tickets range from $48-$65 (New Year's Eve $75) and are available at the box office located at Navy Pier,800 East Grand, by phone at 312-595-5600 or online at www.chicagoshakes.com.
