Theatre & Stage reviews by SalsaChicago.com critic Al Bresloff

"Respect" a Musical Journey of Women (open run)

The Chicago Center for The Performing Arts, that great little venue just off Halsted and Chicago Avenue is hosting a fun-filled musical review that celebrates the history of women through American pop music. Written by Dr. Dorothy Marcic (and based on her book), the production chronicles the lives of women throughout the 20th century using over 60 songs to show these periods of time. Classics like "Tonight, You Belong to Me", "Whatever Lola Wants", "I Want To Be Loved by You". "Hero", "I Will Survive" (what a job they do with this one!) and of course "Respect". This is a show filled with music and humor and the four women that bring s the story are wonderful to watch as well as hear.

Karan Pappas handles the role of Dr. Marcic and acts as narrator. Sharyon Culberson, Emily Price and Jeanette Fitzpatrick do all the rest, and they do it with powerful voices and wonderful movement. The voices are very BIG and unlike most reviews, every word is understandable. When Ms. Fitzpatrick does "let it Please Be Him" the audience ate it up and Ms.Price's Betty Boop was perfection. Ms.Culberson tells a great story of importance about Rosa Parks. All in all, this is a wonderful evening of entertainment and although the time sequences are a bit off, the slide show not always in sync and the sound system not the best, this IS A MUST SEE. Peter J. Loewy uses the small stage to its full advantage and the audience has no problem getting involved from the start- this by the way is NOT just a women's show, but indeed may be the best "date show" in town.

Performances for RESPECT are as follows: Wednesday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Friday at 8 p.m. Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday at 3 p.m.

The theater is located at 777 N. Green Street Tickets range in price from $39-$45 and are available at the box office, call 312-327-2000 or visit www.theaterland.com more on the show- check out www.respectamusicaljourney.com.
